Quick answer

No, not in the usual way. The Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026), the Fire TV Stick HD (2026) and the Fire TV Stick 4K Select run Vega OS, Amazon’s new system. Vega OS only runs apps from the Amazon Appstore, so Downloader, TiviMate, XCIPTV and other common IPTV players cannot be installed. Older sticks that run Fire OS, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), are not affected and install them as before.

If you bought a new Fire TV Stick this autumn and the IPTV setup steps you found online do not work, this is why. Amazon announced the new Fire TV Stick 4K on 30 September 2026, and like the 4K Select before it, it runs Vega OS instead of the Android-based Fire OS. Most setup guides have not caught up yet.

What changed

Every Fire TV device until 2025 ran Fire OS, a version of Android. That is what made Firesticks so popular for IPTV: you could install any Android app, including players such as TiviMate, by downloading it with the Downloader app.

Vega OS is different. It is built on Linux, not Android, and it only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore. There is no Developer Options switch to allow outside apps, and Android installer files simply do not run on it. Amazon has said that starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega OS.

Which Fire TV models are affected

Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen, 2021)Fire OS 7Works
Fire TV Stick HD (2024) and Fire TV Stick LiteFire OS 7Works

The names are confusing: there is a 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K that works and a 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K that does not, and the same for the HD. The year and generation are what matter.

Vega OS sticks vs the 4K Max: the specs

The new sticks are not just locked down; they also have less memory than the stick they replace. That matters for IPTV, because a player holding a 40,000-channel list and a TV guide needs room.

The 4K Select was a short-lived model and has since been replaced by the 3rd Gen 4K. Both are fine for the apps in Amazon’s own store, such as Netflix or Prime Video, but neither is a good IPTV device.

How to check your stick

  1. Open Settings and go to the About screen (on Fire OS: Settings → My Fire TV → About).
  2. Read the device name on the first line, including the generation, for example Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen).
  3. Compare it with the table above. A quick extra check: if you can find Developer Options after pressing Select seven times on the device name, the stick runs Fire OS.

What to do if your stick runs Vega OS

  1. Check the Amazon Appstore. Search for an IPTV player that accepts an M3U link or Xtream Codes login. The Vega OS app catalogue is still growing, so availability changes, and we cannot promise there is a suitable player for your model today.
  2. Return it if you can. If you bought the stick recently, check whether you are still inside the return period and swap it for a Fire OS model.
  3. Use your TV’s own apps. Most Samsung, LG and Hisense TVs from about 2018 onwards can run IBO Player or Smart IPTV directly. See how to install IPTV on a Smart TV.
  4. Use a different device. Google TV devices such as the Google TV Streamer or the Onn 4K Pro run the same Android players as an older Firestick. Compare them in our best device for IPTV guide.
Avoid shortcuts. Sites promising to jailbreak a Vega OS stick or offering modified installers are a security risk to your accounts and home network. There is no supported way to sideload on Vega OS.

Before you buy: a 30-second checklist

  • Read the full name and generation. “Fire TV Stick 4K” alone is not enough: the 2023 model runs Fire OS, the 2026 model runs Vega OS.
  • Look for “Max (2nd Gen)” if you want a stick that installs IPTV players.
  • Be careful with marketplace listings and bundles, which often reuse old photos and descriptions.
  • Check the return policy before you open the box.
  • Not sure? Ask before you buy. Send us the product link on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether it will work.

What about other Fire TV changes?

Separately from Vega OS, Amazon has tightened the rules on Fire OS devices too. Since December 2025 it warns about, and since January 2026 blocks, some outside apps it has flagged for piracy. Mainstream players installed from their developers’ own websites have not been reported as blocked. Our Firestick setup guide covers the safe way to install them.

Which stick to buy for IPTV now

The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen). It runs Fire OS 8, has 2 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, AV1 and Dolby Vision, and installs every common IPTV player. Because new sticks are moving to Vega OS, check the exact name and generation before you buy, especially from marketplace sellers. Then follow our Firestick IPTV setup guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my older Firestick stop working with IPTV?

No. Sticks that run Fire OS keep installing apps as before, and Amazon has not announced any plan to move existing Fire OS sticks to Vega OS. Vega OS comes on new models.

Can I install Downloader on the new Fire TV Stick 4K?

No. Downloader installs Android apps, and Vega OS does not run Android apps from outside the Appstore.

Is the Fire TV Stick 4K Max still available?

Yes, as of October 2026 the 4K Max (2nd Gen) is still sold. It is the newest stick that runs Fire OS.

Is the new Fire TV Stick 4K bad?

Not for the apps in Amazon’s store. It is a capable, cheap streamer for Netflix, Prime Video and similar apps. It is only a poor choice if you want IPTV players that are not in the Amazon Appstore.

Can I use the IPTV app on my phone and cast it to the new stick?

Casting support depends on the app and the stick, and many IPTV players do not support it. A Smart TV app or a different streaming device is the more reliable fix.

Does Vega OS affect Fire TV smart TVs?

Check the About screen of your TV. Fire TV smart TVs that run Fire OS can still install apps through Developer Options, at Settings → Device & Software.
